Top flooring tips before you renovate

Smarter flooring decisions

Planning a renovation? Anita Shirley, Harrisons' in-house interior designer, shares her expert tips to help Australian homeowners make smart flooring decisions. Let's get started ...

1. Always renovate fromthe FLOOR UP.

2. Flooring should be the first product you choose as its one of the largest surface areas. Choose your flooring first but lay it last so it’s protected from any other renovationswithin your home.

3. Take advantage ofviewing carpet and vinyl samples in different spaces in your home. A carpet or vinyl sample will look different in your home as opposed to a showroom.

4. Don’t be afraid tochoose a slightly darker carpet colour. Carpets generally appear around 20% lighter on the floor when installed compared to a smallsample.

5. Consider the effect colours have on your space. Darker colours absorb light and can make a room appear smaller, lighter colours reflect the light andcreate a sense of spaciousness.

6. Learn the characteristics of the different carpet types. Solution Dyed Nylon (SDN), Wool, Polyester & Polyprop. SDN is currently the most popular because of its fade and stain resistance qualities.

7. When planning your interior colour scheme stay to the same colour tones on your flooring, wallcolour & window treatments. Harrisons have matched all their carpets to paint colours and even curtain fabrics, helping you avoid costly design errors.

8. Never underestimate the importance of underlay. Carpet underlay absorbs all the wear and tear increasing the longevity of your carpet. A high density underlay will feel luxurious underfoot, increasesound insulation, reduces heat loss and acts as a dust barrier by reducing theflow of air, thereby reducing the dust particles carried by the air.
